AI for Reading Improvement

Artificial intelligence can now drive cars, land rocket ships, and deliver your food. But can it teach a child to read?

Many experts believe it’s only a matter of time before AI-powered reading tools become a regular feature in classrooms. That prospect often brings mixed feelings - excitement about innovation, paired with a quiet concern about being replaced.

I like to see it this way: AI is a powerful tool, but not a substitute for human impact.

Think of AI as a calculator. It can process information at extraordinary speed, reduce errors and operate with remarkable efficiency. But it doesn’t understand the problem - it doesn’t know why it matters, or whether the answer is meaningful. That layer of judgement, context, and purpose still belongs to us.

How AI is Transforming Reading Instruction

To be clear, this isn’t an endorsement of any single tool. Instead, it’s an overview of how AI is already being used to support reading development in practical ways.

  1. Personalised Texts

Selecting the right text is one of the most important - and time-consuming - tasks in literacy teaching, especially in classrooms with varied reading levels. AI can quickly generate texts tailored to each student’s ability and interests, making differentiation far more efficient.

  1. Highly Targeted Practice

Beyond just generating texts, AI allows educators to design content with specific learning goals in mind. The same passage can be adapted across multiple reading levels, and paired with targeted questions to reinforce key skills and scaffold understanding.

  1. Speech Recognition & Instant Feedback

One of the most promising developments is AI’s ability to “listen” to students read aloud. Using speech recognition, these tools can analyse reading fluency by tracking:

  • Reading Speed (wpm)

  • Pronunciation Accuracy

  • Pauses and hesitations

This provides the student with instant feedback on their oral reading fluency, and also allows for ongoing assessment without needing a teacher to manually listen and score each session.

Benefits of AI in Reading Development

  1. Greater Engagement

Reading can often feel like a chore for struggling learners. AI can introduce elements of gamification - points, badges, progress tracking - as well as offer choice in reading material, turning reading into something more engaging and self-directed.

  1. Increased Independence

AI tools encourage children to become more independent learners by empowering them to choose how they learn, without being completely reliant on an adult to guide them through every step.

  1. Consistency in Practice

Reading development requires regular practice, but not all families have the resources, or more so, the time, to support this daily. AI can help bridge that gap, enabling consistent, structured reading practice beyond the classroom.

The Role of AI

AI can support how students learn to read—but it cannot replace the human role in why and what they learn. At its best, it accelerates practice and personalisation; but it is teachers who provide meaning, direction, and lasting impact.
